Date: 31/01/02 INDUSTRY Commissioner Erkki Liikanen is being urged to settle a dispute over claims that German and Dutch brick makers are being forced out of the Belgian market by red-tape. Dutch liberal MEP Toine Manders says Belgian authorities are insisting that imported bricks pass local conformity tests before they can carry the mandatory 'Benor' mark attesting to their safety and quality. But Manders says this may breach the EU's single market rules because the bricks have already met European safety standards in their own country. 'These conditions cost both time and money,' said Manders. European Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Sociey, Erkki Liikanen, is being urged to settle a dispute over claims that German and Dutch brick makers are being forced out of the Belgian market by red tape. |
