The UK is to receive €800m which is two-thirds of the sum the government had requested from the European Commission following the 2001 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. Under 'co-financing' rules the European Commission can pay 60% of a country's eligible spending on the disease, with the Member State meeting the bill for the remainder.
