The new UK Agriculture Secretary, Margaret Beckett, is determined to reform the Common Agricultural Policy, according to her aides. In a speech at the UK Labour Party Conference on 2 October 2001, Mrs Beckett said that British farmers would have no future unless they listened to the needs of consumers and the market. She said that huge direct and indirect subsidies for agriculture have distorted the market.
