The terrorist attacks in the United States on 11 September 2001 have given new impetus to the European Commission's proposals to introduce tough measures against money laundering. Negotiations had reached deadlock due to resistance from the European Parliament. MEPs were due to meet in Strasbourg on 2 October 2001 to discuss the Commission's proposals and try to reach a compromise.
