In an interview with the Irish Times newspaper, 21 June 2001, Romano Prodi, the President of the European Commission, threw the EU's strategy to overcome Ireland's shock rejection of the Treaty of Nice into disarray when he said EU enlargement could continue despite the Irish vote.
