The decision by the US Government to grant $5.5 billion farm relief aid to US farmers was described by Franz Fischler, European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, as further evidence of the incoherence between US demands that countries' agricultural policies be market-oriented and that which they apply to their own agricultural sector. This, he said, is the fourth year in succession that the US government has provided supplementary assistance to its farmers, which, in total, amounts to $30 billion since 1998. |
