A public hearing on the Commission's first ever Green Paper on the future of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) was held from 5-7 June 2001 in Brussels, as part of a wide-ranging debate. The aim of the debate was to identify measures designed to tackle the shortcomings of the CFP which threaten the sustainability of the fishing industry. Following this debate, the Commission is to bring forward its proposals for a revised CFP which should enter into force on 1 January 2003.
