The 3rd UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries which took place in Brussels from 14-20 May 2001, provided a key opportunity to agree on appropriate national and international policies and measures for sustainable development of the least developed countries and their progressive integration into the world economy. In order to make real progress, the programme of action must be complemented by practical and operational measures that can be effectively followed up at the global, regional, national and sectoral levels. The European Union has adopted and proposed a number of trade related measures to further the integration of LDCs in the global economy for growth and poverty eradication. Some of these measures have already been adopted and are being implemented. These measures and policies already contribute to the development process of the LDCs, but would of course gain in impact if other development partners were to follow. Other policy measures require action at international level and the EC therefore seeks the support of partners to reach the objectives.
