In December 1997 the European Commission established the European Group on Ethics (EGE) to succed the Group of Advisers on the Ethical Implications of Biotechnology, established in 1992. Its task is to advise on the ethical aspects of science and new technologies as they relate to the preparation and implementation of legislation or Community policies. In April 2000 President Prodi announced that he wished to strengthen the role of the Group and the remit of the EGE was subsequently revised. In April 2001 the Commission appointed the twelve Members of the EGE for the period 2001-2004. |
