EU and Chile end long-running trade dispute on spirits

On the 26 January 2001, the EU and Chile confirmed they reached an agreement to bring the the 20-year old so-called "Whisky-Pisco" trade dispute to an end.

As a result EU spirits such as whisky would no longer be discrimated against in the Chilean market. Welcoming the agreement, Commissioner Lamy said "this is good news for EU spirits producers who would again be able to compete on level terms in Chile.
