Background and further information:

The Conference was attended, among others, by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Speaking at the conference, Mr Medvedev called for a new security pact.

Mr Sarkozy supported the proposal but highlighted the talks should include North America and take place within existing security structures. He also proposed a summit meeting of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Europe to be held at the end of 2009 'to discuss (Russian) proposals and those of the European Union for new concepts of a pan-European defence'.

The First World Policy Conference was held on 8 October 2017, in Evian (France).
