The country had been in chaos since the fall of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011, and uniting it once more was seen as a key factor in solving the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean region. However, commentators were nevertheless sceptical that Macron's initiative would bring real results. On the 27 July 2017 President Macron said that France would set up processing centres in Libya for asylum seekers trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean. |
