Tens of thousands of people attended a series of rallies in Cologne on the 31 July 2016 in reaction to the failed coup attempt in Turkey on the 15 July 2016 against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The main event attracted more than 20,000 Turks living in Germany. Some of the protesters expressed anger at the fact that the Turkish president was not allowed to speak to the congregated crowd via video link. A German court order issued on the 30 July 2016 had prevented Erdogan from taking part in this way. Other protests took place in Cologne on the 31 July 2016, including an anti-Erdogan demonstration called by the far-right political party Pro NRW under the motto 'No tributes to Erdogan in Germany: Stop the Islamist autocrat from the Bosporus'. Politico wrote that 'The divisions within Turkish society exposed and widened by the failed July 15 military uprising and subsequent crackdown are roughly mirrored among the 3 million ethnic Turks who live in Germany'. |
