Poland’s government spelled out on the 28 October 2008 the country’s path to adopting the euro by 2012, part of a series of moves designed to help calm spooked investors in the autumn of 2008 who have been retreating from the Polish zloty as emerging market currencies are buffeted by the global financial crisis.

The Polish government said it wanted Poland to adopt the euro in 2012, but opposition to the plan - including from the President - may force a referendum.
