Hospitals, companies and other organisations across Europe, Asia and the United States were hit by a cyberattack on the 12 May 2017 which was said by Europe's police agency Europol to be 'unprecedented' in its scale. Among companies affected were the Spanish telecoms company Telefónica, Spanish energy companies Iberdrola and Gas Natural, Portugal Telecom, Germany’s national railway company Deutsche Bahn and French carmaker Renault. Health services were also badly affected in countries such as the United Kingdom. The European Cybercrime Centre, EC3, at Europol worked closely with affected countries cybercrime units and key industry partners to mitigate the threat and assist victims. The attack would require a complex international investigation to identify the culprits. The Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (JCAT), at EC3 was a group of specialist international cyber investigators and was specially designed to assist in such investigations and would play an important role in supporting the investigation. |
