Background and further information: These remarks were seen as a harder line that the one taken by the French President François Hollande, who had a few days before showed the he intention to stick to the initial plans from the EU, which would bring up to 30,000 refugees to France. The interview was published ahead of a meeting between German chancellor Angela Merkel and Mr Hollande to discuss ways of stepping up the fight against islamic terrorism in Syria and Iraq following the terrorist attacks in Paris on 13 November. The period was also influenced by regional elections across France, scheduled to be held in early December. Polls indicated radical right's Front National increasing its popularity. This feature analyses the remarks and the reaction to an interview given by France's Prime Minister with a German newspaper, in which he defended that Europe was not in a position to receive any more migrants and argued there was a need for the European Union to gain control of its external borders in an effective way. |
