A US Treasury report (Semiannual Report on International Economic and Exchange Rate Policies, October 2013) has offered a rare criticism of German economic policies, warning its export-reliant growth model was harmful to the eurozone.

In the Treasury report, published on the 30 October 2013, the Obama administration criticized Germany for maintaining a large trade surplus throughout the eurozone. It also flagged up Germany's limited domestic demand-led growth as a risk not only to the eurozone but to global economic recovery.

BBC News reported on the 1 November 2013 that Germany hit back at US criticism of its export-led growth model, describing the attack as "incomprehensible".
