The US has put Ukraine's interior minister and several other officials on a draft sanctions list, while the so-called "Euromaidan" movement continued to see between 500 and 2,000 pro-EU protesters camped out each night behind barricades in central Kiev. In the meantime the EU is still willing to hold talks, according to EUObserver on 10 January 2014. EurActiv reported that Ukraine's three main opposition leaders agreed that the only way to achieve their goal of anchoring Ukraine to the EU is a common victory at the 2015 presidential election, but there were strong divides over election tactics. In the meantime, there were reports that criticism about the way EU-Ukraine talks had been handled was getting louder in France. Deutsche Welle reported on the 16 January 2013 that a court in Kyiv had outlawed major public protests in the capital until the 8 March 2014, a move government critics decried as the groundwork for a stronger police response to opposition demonstrations. Enlargement and Neighbourhood Commissioner Štefan Füle said he was “shocked” and “deeply disappointed” by new legislation which the Ukrainian parliament pushed through. The German government said on the next day that the new laws would have "consequences" for its EU relations. |
