The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine on the 5 August 2014. 'Immediate action' was required to halt the crisis, as 'access to power and water became more difficult, homes were destroyed and health workers fled'. UNHCR reported on the 5 August 2014 that more than 700,000 people had left Ukraine for Russia during the country’s four months of conflict. In addition, 117,000 people had become displaced within Ukraine, according to the UN’s refugee agency. UNHCR reported on the 2 September 2014 that more than a million people had left their homes because of the escalating conflict in eastern Ukraine. 814,000 people had crossed the border into Russia in 2014. In addition, during August 2014 the number of people displaced inside Ukraine itself had doubled to at least 260,000. The UN refugee agency said that fighting in eastern Ukraine, in particular around Donetsk, Luhansk and neighbouring towns, was driving more people from their homes and increasing the need for humanitarian aid. |
