On the 24 February 2014, Russia recalled its ambassador to Ukraine. BBC News reported that Ukraine had issued a warrant for the arrest of the Mr Yanukovych. Russian leaders challenged the legitimacy of the new government. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said interim authorities in Kiev had conducted an 'armed mutiny'. The Russian foreign ministry said dissenters in mainly Russian-speaking regions faced suppression. There were fears that some of parts of eastern Ukraine might seek to link more closely with Russia.
