Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko pledged on the 13 February 2010 to challenge results of the 7 February 2010 presidential election in court, insisting it was rigged in favour of her opponent, Viktor Yanukovich. Ms Tymoshenko’s announcement came amidst calls from Mr Yanukovich for her government to resign. Their election spat threatened to plunge Ukraine, a country of 46m citizens which has been long plagued by poisonous political rivalries, into weeks of court battles. It was unclear if the legal disputes would end in favour of Mr Yanukovich, allowing him to take over as President, or set the stage for a repeat vote. |
