Petro Poroshenko was sworn in as President of Ukraine on the 7 June 2014, setting out a plan to bring peace to the conflict-torn east of the country. However, President, Poroshenko will have less power than his predecessor. The Ukrainian parliament passed an amendment to this effect in February 2014. The centre of power was now the parliament and the cabinet it elected. Poroshenko had already announced that he would work with the current interim prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk of the 'Batkivshchina' (Fatherland) party. Ukraine said on the 9 June 2014 it had reached a 'mutual understanding' with Russia on parts of a plan proposed by Mr Poroshenko for ending violence in the east of the country. The president signalled on the 11 June 2014 he would be ready to hold talks with opponents in eastern Ukraine if pro-Russian insurgents there agreed to lay down their weapons. News sources reported on the 14 June 2014 that separatists in the eastern part of Ukraine had shot down a Ukrainian military plane killing at least 49 people on board. Ukraine's President Poroshenko vowed to retaliate after the incident. |
