During a press conference with the Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite on 24 November 2014, Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko stated that his country would hold a referendum on joining NATO once it met certain criteria for membership. Mr Poroshenko later said in a keynote speech to the Ukrainian parliament on 27 November 2014 (click here for more information on the subject) that the country's non-aligned status did not guarantee its security and needed to be changed. Facing the threat of Russian's incursions in its territory, Ukraine received offers of military assistance from Lithuania and other NATO member states. NATO top military commander, US General Philip Breedlove, warned on 26 November 2014 against Crimea's militarisation, which might also affect the whole Black Sea region. On the following day, European Union's countries decided to blacklist 13 Ukrainian separatists and five entities, as a direct reaction to the so-called election which took place in eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk on 2 November (click here for more information on the election). Also on 27 November 2014, according to the news agency Sputnik International, Ukrainian MPs submitted a draft proposal defending the country's exit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and another one to abolish Donbas region's special status which had been granted on 16 September 2014. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said in a statement released on 1 December 2014 that the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists had agreed to a ceasefire in the Luhansk region. However, several reports kept on mentioning continuous attacks from both sides. |
