Ukraine's military structure announced on 7 November 2014 that a column of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer artillery systems and trucks carrying ammunition and fighters had crossed into the eastern part of the country from Russia. The report of a new Russian movement of armour across the border follows a charge on the day before by pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine that Kiev government forces had launched a new offensive - which Kiev immediately denied. UK prime minister David Cameron warned Russian president Vladimir Putin against ripping up the international rulebook by destabilising Ukraine and promised to let him know of the long-term economic consequences if he pursued this course during their meeting at the G20 summit in Australia 15-16 November 2014. Deutsche Welle and other sources reported on the 12 November 2014 Ukraine's defense minister as saying that government military forces were preparing for a possible new offensive by separatists in the country's east. It came as international observers reported spotting weapons convoys on the move. The UN's Security Council had an emergency meeting on the same day. While the United States defended that there needed to be greater international pressure on Russia to abide by a ceasefire in Ukraine, Russia denied it was a threat to its neighbour. |
