Kyiv said that pro-Russian separatists had shot down a Ukrainian military helicopter near the eastern city of Slavyansk. 14 people were killed, including an army general. Rebels in the area claimed, for its side, to be holding four observers of the European security body OSCE. The Ukrainian newly-elected President, Petro Poroshenko vowed to punish "terrorists and bandits" developing their activities in the eastern part of the country. The Lithuanian foreign minister, Linas Linkevicius, stated that the new Ukrainian leader had reassured his intention to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union in June 2014, keeping his electoral promises. During a conference on the 2 June 2014, Kostyantin Yelisieiev, Ukraine's ambassador to the EU, made an appeal for his country to be given a clear membership perspective to the European Union. Ukraine's former leader, Viktor Yanukovych, as well as his sons and some other people connected to him, launched court proceedings to get their assets unfrozen. |
