Protesters in Ukraine strengthened barricades and enlarged their camp after talks between the opposition and President Viktor Yanukovych failed on the 24 January 2014. About 1,000 protesters moved from Kiev's Independence Square to occupy a government building. The EU stressed the need for further dialogue, as EU Commissioner Štefan Füle visited Kyiv on 24-25 January 2014 in an attempt to calm tensions. High Representative Catherine Ashton was also expected in the following days. EUObserver reported on the 25 January 2014 that an 'overwhelming majority' of EU countries believed the time was not right to talk of EU sanctions on Ukraine. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy blamed Ukrainian authorities for 'destabilisng' Ukraine on the 24 January 2014. |
