Article reported that Ukraine’s main two opposition parties said on the 24 April 2012 they would join forces in October 2012 parliamentary elections to challenge President Viktor Yanukovich, pledging to reverse his rollback of democracy. In a declaration, the parties of Yulia Tymoshenko, jailed opposition leader, and Arseniy Yatseniuk, former foreign minister, announced they would present one list of candidates, ending competition between the two parties. They called for other opposition parties to join them. There was no immediate reaction from Mr Yanukovich, who was accused of persecuting his rivals. But analysts said formation of the opposition alliance marks the first serious attempt to challenge his two-year grip on political power. Separately, Ukraine came under growing international pressure over claims that Yulia Tymoshenko, the jailed former premier, was beaten by guards in April 2012. |
