Ukraine's opposition has issued an ultimatum to President Viktor Yanukovych on the 23 January 2014 by giving the government 24 hours to stop the fighting in Kyiv. This position was held after unsucessful talks between the government and the opposition which had taken place on the day before. The warning also followed a day of heavy clashes in the capital Kyiv that left multiple activists dead and prompted international condemnation. On the 23 January 2014, reports mentioned an eight-hour truce taking place while talks between government and opposition continued. The truce was announced by opposition politician and former heavyweight boxer Vitali Klitschko. There were also reports that the protests had spread to other cities beyond Kyiv. Opposition demonstrators have reportedly occupied regional government buildings in Lviv, western part of the country. Commission President José Manuel Barroso proposed on that same day to send the EU’s top diplomats to Kyiv to help dialogue and calm tensions. Mr. Yanukovich reportedly accepted the mediation proposal and assured Barroso that he did not foresee the declaration of a state of emergency in Ukraine. |
