Commentary feature in which author argued that Europe needed to confront Ukraine’s leadership sooner rather than later. For Europe, the concern was that the Ukrainian elites were carrying out policies moving the country into becoming a quasi-authoritarian kleptocracy while posing as 'pro-European' and claiming to lead the country towards Europe. But the events of the previous months showed that, with the current political class in power, there was no European future for Ukraine. Like in Moldova before, the private enrichment of ostensibly 'pro-European' politicians would only discredit the Union, diminish its influence and derail the reform process within the country. The EU therefore needed to act now if it wanted to maintain credibility in the Eastern Neighbourhood. |
