On 27 November 2014, the Ukrainian parliament approved Arseny Yatseniuk for a new term as prime minister, in an emotional ceremony which tried to counter reports of high-level disunity in what message to send to Russia over its support to separatists in the country's eastern region (click here for more information on the subject). Mr Yatseniuk was supported by more than two third of the MPs. Ukraine's president Petro Poroshenko also tried to shake off allegations of rivalry between himself and Arseniy Yatsenyuk by publicly supporting Mr Yatseniuk during his keynote speech. Mr Poroshenko declared that a unified state was the only solution to be considered in Ukraine's future and that the country's security was no longer guaranteed with it's non-aligned status (click here for more information on the subject). On 2 December 2014, the new Ukrainian government got the approval of the parliament. The cabinet headed by Mr Yatseniuk has foreign technocrats in key financial roles. Political parties in favour of closer links to the European Union scored a strong victory in the parliamentary election which took place on 26 October 2014. |
