Report of a study ('The Europe Report: A win-win situation') commissioned by the high profile Mayor of London Boris Johnson and published on the 6 August 2014, which looked at how the City of London economy could develop in the next twenty years under four different scenarios in terms of the United Kingdom's relations with the EU. At the meeting launching the report on the 6 August 2014 Boris Johnson told an audience of leading business and financial experts in the City of London that the European Union was suffering from a crisis of economic under performance and a collapse of political trust. However he believed that a reformed EU, minus crippling regulations and directives, but with increased focus on completing the single market for the benefit of every Londoner and all Europeans, would be the single best option for London, the UK and Europe. According to Open Europe the key reforms proposed in the report were: addressing the relationship between euro ins and outs, liberalising the single market in services, safeguards on the single market in financial services and the position of the City of London, EU budget reform, reducing the burden of social and employment law, and halting over-regulation. At the same meeting launching the report, Boris Johnson ended months of speculation by saying he would seek to become an Member of Parliament (MP) again at the 2015 General Election. Commentators speculated that the charismatic politician hoped to eventually replace David Cameron as leader of the Conservative Party. |
