EUObserver and other news sources on the 3 November 2014 quoted unnamed sources from the German government telling Der Spiegel that German Chancellor Angela Merkel would prefer the United Kingdom leave the European Union than have the UK adopt rules to limit the free movement of people within the EU. UK Prime Minister David Cameron had said he wanted to change rules on immigration and residency for workers from elsewhere in the EU in order to reduce the influx of migrants to Britain. Steffen Seibert, the spokesman for Angela Merkel, said that the German chancellor wanted Britain to remain an 'active and engaged' member of the European Union but added that she would would not give way to the British prime minister's plans to curb immigration from other EU countries. Chancellor George Osborne insisted the UK will pursue its 'national interest' in Europe despite German warnings about its future in the EU. Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband, accused Mr Cameron of ‘weasel words’ over position on leaving the EU. The Prime Ministers of Sweden, Finland and Norways also stressed the importance of the principle of free movement within the EU as they joined Mr Cameron and other Northern European leaders in Finland on the 6-7 November 2014 |
