The release of several letters exchanged between the leaders of Germany's AfD party in January 2015 exposed deep ideological fractures which might become a challenge to the party's long-term prospects. The letters also showed a clear battle to control the party, further clouding its future ahead of its national congress taking place on 31 January 2015. AfD's founder Bernd Lucke sought to take sole control of the party, and the bid triggered open conflict with his two co-chairs, Frauke Petry and Konrad Adam, who want to broaden the AfD's appeal for far-right voters with an anti-immigrant stance. At the party congress, Mr Lucke managed to strenghten his control of the party and to put an end to the power struggle, as he persuaded a two-thirds majority of the 1,473 delegates to back his plan to dump his two co-leaders by December 2015. Analysts say the move may cost the AfD in the long run, because Lucke's scholarly style and criticism of eurozone bailouts had been often lost on right-wing voters. |
