Turkish purges exposed by Council of Europe

The Council of Europe Committee on the Honouring of Obligations and Commitments by Member States of the Council of Europe (Monitoring Committee) in its Post-monitoring dialogue with Turkey issued a report on the 12 December 2016 called The failed coup in Turkey of 15 July 2016: some facts and figures.

The substantial report concluded that the following actions taken by the Turkish government in response had taken place:

+ Over 125,000 persons dismissed
+ Legal action against 92,607 suspects, 39,378 of whom have so far been arrested, as part of the investigation into the failed coup attempt.
+ 3,673 judges and prosecutors dismissed and 2,700 suspended
+ 177 media outlets shut down and 11 reopened
+ Over 140 journalists arrested.
+ about 1,800 associations/foundations shut down
+ about 2,100 schools, dormitories, and universities shut down
