Reports of continuing tensions between the Turkish government and Kurdish representatives within Turkey in the latter's desire for greater autonomy within Turkey or for the more radical right to create a greater Kurdistan bring together Kurds from Turkey and neighbouring countries such as Iraq, Syria and Iran. Turkish prosecutors on the 28 December 2015 opened an investigation into the country's top Kurdish politician, Selahattin Demirtas, the co-chair of the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP), over a statement on 'autonomy', a day after a group of Kurdish political groups set out a framework for self-rule. On the 27 December 2015, a congress of Kurdish political and civil society groups that included the HDP issued a 14-point declaration for self-rule and decentralisation as a new democratic project to address what it described as the failed model of the Turkish state. |
