Former Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was officially sworn in as the President of Turkey on the 28 August 2014 after winning the country's first ever popular vote for head of state earlier in August 2014. There was expectation that Mr Erdogan would work to strengthen the role of the Presidency in Turkey and critics warned of a rising authoritarianism in the country. During his first speech, the new Turkish president said that EU membership and democratic reforms were his main priorities. |
