Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced on the 5 May 2016 that he would stand down at an extraordinary congress of the ruling AK Party on the 28 May 2016.
Rumours suggested a growing political rift between Mr Davutoglu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
EU officials were said to be uneasy as to whether the development would affect the recently agreed migration deal with Turkey largely negotiated by Mr Davutoglu.
