The BBC and other news sources reported on the 13 August 2015 that two months after Turkey's ruling AK Party lost its majority in national elections, it had failed to agree coalition terms, pushing the country towards a new election. Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said talks with the secular CHP had ended 'negatively' and he wanted new elections as soon as possible. Mr Davutoglu formally stopped the process of attempting to form a government on the 18 August 2015. The development came amid rising violence in Turkey and in neighbouring Iraq and Syria. Since the June 2015 vote, a ceasefire with the Kurdish rebel PKK had also ended. On the 21 August 2015 President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that Turkey would go to an election on 1 November 2015. EU and Council of Europe officials expressed concern at police raids agains various media outlets in Turkey. |
