In July 2017, twelve months on from Turkey’s coup attempt in July 2016, Ankara was forging ahead with a religious-conservative agenda on society, despite significant popular opposition. In its history, Turkey has often battled with ethnic violence, religious tensions, and political strife. What was dangerous this time was that the necessities of continued political predominance at home were pushing the leadership into unsafe domestic choices and foreign adventures. In many ways, Ankara’s policy decisions since 15 July 2016, have put Turkey in a bigger danger than the failed coup itself. On the first anniversary itself 15 July 2017 Turkey held a number of events to mark the occasion, with the day announced as a public holiday, a special session of parliament held, memorials unveiled and rallies held with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan giving speeches in both Ankara and Istanbul. On the day before the first anniversary the government continued its dismissal of state employees, sacking another 7,395 for alleged links to what it called terrorist groups. |
