Turkey's government agreed on the 14 June 2013 to suspend redevelopment plans for a park in Istanbul until a court ruled on the issue. After late-night talks with protesters, a government spokesman said there would be no attempt to start the project until a court decided on its legality. The plan to rebuild an old barracks on Gezi Park had sparked Turkey's biggest anti-government protests in decades. If the court backed the government, the project would be put to a popular vote in a referendum. However on the 15 June 2013 some of the demonstrators decided to continue their protests, remaining in Gezi park despite the proposal by the government to delay plans to build in the area. Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan demonstrated the extent of his popular support at 'Respect for the National Will' rallies organised by his ruling AK party in Ankara and Istanbul on the 15 and 16 June 2013. Protesters clashed with Turkish police in Istanbul after riot squads used tear gas and water cannon to eject demonstrators from Gezi Park overnight 15-16 June 2013. |
