Turkey's police detained on 31 October 2016 the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Cumhuriyet, seen as a leading publication of the government's opposition. The newspaper, which had published revelations embarrassing for the government, said at least a dozen journalists and executives were detained in early morning raids. The detentions came after Turkish authorities fired more than 10,000 civil servants and closed 15 pro-Kurdish and other media outlets, the latest purge since July’s failed military coup. OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović said on the 31 October 2016 'This latest wave of arrests of members of the media is yet another blow to media freedom in Turkey, ... The authorities should restore media freedom and safeguard a vibrant and pluralistic media landscape in the country, not take measures against it'. The representative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in Turkey, Erol Onderoglu, alongside two other people went on trial on the 8 November 2016 on charges of making terrorist propaganda for Kurdish militants. Media organisations and the European Union urged for all charges to be dropped. |
