Turkish authorities confiscated footage of an interview filmed by German broadcaster Deutsche Welle with the country's minister of Youth and Sport, Akif Cagatay Kilic, according to media reports in September 2016. The interview had focused on July's coup attempt as well as the mass layoffs and arrests that took place in its aftermath. The interview also included remarks about the media situation in Turkey and the position of women in Turkish society, before asking Kilic elaborate on several controversial statements made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on these subjects. According to reports, Mr Kilic excused himself from the room and soon after his press officer announced that the broadcaster would not be allowed to broadcast the interview. Later on, the interview footage was confiscated by ministerial staff. The action prompted an outcry over press freedom in Turkey, as this was not the first time Turkish authorities clash with Western media sources. |
