Reports of the developments in the Greek debt crisis from the 15 June 2015 leading up to a Eurogroup meeting on the 18 June 2015. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was under growing pressure from the lending Institutions (EC/ECB/IMF) to accept their proposal for breaking a deadlock in bailout talks, which the Greek leader had so far refused to consider. At a meeting of the European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on 15 June 2015, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said the ECB was doing all it can to facilitate a successful outcome of the talks. However, Mr Draghi also pointed out that further financial assistance to Greece was 'a political decision'. The rhetoric rose on both sides on the 16 June 2015 with Mr Tsipras saying that IMF bore 'criminal responsibility' for the impact of the austerity measures implemented in Greece over the last few years. He said Greece's creditors were trying to humiliate the country. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker responded 'I don’t care about the Greek government, I do care about the Greek people' ... “The debate in Greece and outside Greece would be easier if the Greek government would tell exactly what the Commission... is really proposing'. The Bank of Greece (as the Central Bank of Greece) said on the 17 June 2015 'Failure to reach an agreement would, on the contrary, mark the beginning of a painful course that would lead initially to a Greek default and ultimately to the country's exit from the euro area and – most likely – from the European Union. A manageable debt crisis, as the one that we are currently addressing with the help of our partners, would snowball into an uncontrollable crisis, with great risks for the banking system and financial stability. An exit from the euro would only compound the already adverse environment, as the ensuing acute exchange rate crisis would send inflation soaring'. |
