The European elections in May 2014 elected the new members of the European Parliament for a mandate which lasts until 2019. Martin Schulz stepped down as European Parliament president on the 18 June 2014, after two years and five months in office. Schulz was set to continue as group leader of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the EU Assembly. According to EurActiv on the 19 June 2014, MEPs from the European Parliament's outgoing Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee expressed concern about the poisonous role that Eurosceptic groups could play in consumer legislation during the following five-year legislature. Italy’s social democrats got control of the European Parliament’s economic affairs committee, as the assembly’s political groups reached a deal on the 25 June 2014 to divide control of its legislative committees. The eighth EU assembly was formally constitued on the 1 July 2014 with 751 MEPs from 186 national parties. |
