The UK in a Changing Europe promotes rigorous, high-quality and independent research into the complex and ever changing relationship between the UK and the European Union (EU). It provides an authoritative, non-partisan and impartial reference point for those looking for information, insights and analysis about UK-EU relations that stands aside from the politics surrounding the debate. The Initiative’s work is tailored to be easily accessible to policy makers, businesses, journalists, civil society organisations, educational institutions and the general public who are interested in the UK’s relationship with the EU. It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and based at King’s College London. The merger between PSA Group, owner of the Peugeot, Citroen and DS brands and General Motors’ European division (which includes Opel and Vauxhall) announced on the 6 March 2017 will usher in significant change in the European car industry. A combined PSA-GM will be the second largest car maker in Europe behind Volkswagen, and the merger will trigger significant restructuring and efforts to cut costs at PSA-GM. That in turn raises potential closure risks for plants and workers in the United Kingdom especially given the nature of the UK’s flexible labour markets. Uncertainty over the whether the British car industry will be inside the EU's Single Market or even the Customs Union in a few years’ time increase that risk. |
