The author says that in absolute terms, the citizens of Turkey deserve visa-free access to the EU. But at this point in time, - in the spring of 2016, the issue is different. In March 2016 Brussels and Ankara agreed to a deal that aimed to stem the flow of migrants from Turkey to the EU and promised among other things to lift the visa requirements for Turkish citizens entering the EU - to trade visas for refugees in effect. A crisis might soon emerge on this issue. A key deadline would arrive on the 4 May 2016 when the European Commission would issue its next report on Turkey’s progress in meeting the criteria for visa liberalisation. Politico and other news sources suggested that the European Commission would recommend a 'qualified' recommendation for visa liberalisation on the 4 May 2016. However, the European Parliament would also subsequently have to vote on the issue. |
