Following the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union in June 2016, the future shape of policies and finance to support agriculture, land management in Wales and rural communities may be decided in Wales. The Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee of the National Assembly for Wales wanted to explore the principles that should underpin the new Welsh polices that would be needed to replace those currently set by the European Union and set up an Inquiry in September 2016. This would help to shape the Committee’s work and inform the approach it took to developing principles from which new policies could be developed. The Committee published its report in March 2017. The Committee argued that ambitious and innovative ‘made in Wales’ policies would be critical to the future success of agriculture in Wales post-Brexit. The Welsh Government gave its response in June 2017. |
