Ceremonies were held in Armenia and around the world on the 24 April 2015 to mark the centenary of the start of mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks. The term 'genocide' used by the Armenians, several governments in the EU and the rest of the world and the European Parliament to describe the killings was disputed by the Turkish authorities.

Germany was set to officially recognise the massacre, a move which was answered with warnings by Turkey. Germany hosts one of the largest Turkish communities in Europe. However, the German Foreign Ministry argued that labeling the events as a genocide would hurt the delicate rapprochement process between Armenia and Turkey.
