Italy’s caretaker government of unelected technocrats led by Mario Monti took charge of the eurozone’s third-biggest economy on the 16 November 2011 to the applause of Europe’s leaders and scepticism of investors.

Mr Monti would present his government’s as yet unexplained economic programme to the Senate on the 17 November 2011 for a vote of confidence, with the procedure expected to be repeated in the lower house of the Italian parliament on the 17 November 2011.
