United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron definitively ruled out British involvement in any military action against Syria after the government lost a crucial vote in the House of Commons on the 29 August 2013. The vote had been designed to help pave the way for a possible intervention with the US and other forces against the regime of President Assad in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by the Syrian regime against its own people. The move was seen as a major blow to the authority of David Cameron and of significance for relations between the UK and the United States and for future UK foreign policy. French President Francois Hollande said he was still ready to join the US in strikes on Syria after the British vote. For its part, Germany confirmed on the 30 August 2013 that it would not commit any forces to a Syria attack. |
